Dry Eye

Alteration of ocular surface due to a deficiency in the lachrymal film's capacity to lubricate the eye surface.

Causes

  • Limited tear production (volume and/or quantity).
  • Excessive evaporation: instability of the tear film by an alteration in the lipid layer.

Symptoms

  • Feeling of discomfort.
  • Strange body and dryness sensation.

Ojos secos

Factors

External:

  • Wind, air conditioning, heating and/or pollution increase evaporation.
  • Contact lenses, eye drops and medications decrease tear production.

Internal:

  • Alteration of blinking.
  • Alteration of the aqueous component of the teardrop (aging, hormonal factors, Sjögren disease).
  • Alterations in the lipid component (blepharitis).
  • Alterations in the mucinous component (scabbing conjunctivitis, trachoma, eye burns).
  • Decreased reflex of tear production.

Lachrymal system

  • Secretory system:
    • o Reflex tears.
    • o Basal tear: Krause and Wolfring glands.
  • Excretory system:
    • o Lachrymal points.
    • o Lachrymal sack.
    • o Nasolachrymal duct.

Teardrop

Composition

  • Water: 98%.
  • Fatty acids and other lipid molecules that slow down the evaporation of water and stabilize the tear.
  • Proteins: located in the lower part of the tear film, they have affinity for the surface of the eye and water.
  • Minerals.

Structure

  • Lipid layer (oil):
    • o It reduces the evaporation of the tear film.
    • o Keeps the humidity.
    • o It lubricates the eyelid.
  • Aqueous coating:
    • o It moisturizes and provides nutrients and oxygen.
    • o It maintains the optimum viscosity of tears.
  • Mucinous layer:
    • o It helps the tear film to remain attached to the surface of the eye.

Functions:

  • Metabolic.
  • Optical.
  • Bacteriostatic.
  • Lubricant.
  • Photo-absorbent.
  • Nasal moistening.
  • Drags small foreign bodies with the flicker.

Sjögren syndrome

Systemic autoimmune disease that affects mainly exocrine glands of the organism, such as the salivary and the lachrymal glands, causing a drop of their secretions, which is why it is also called dry syndrome..

Characteristics:

  • Eye dryness.
  • Mouth dryness.
  • Rheumatic arthritis.
  • Systemic alterations of autoimmune diseases.
  • Sjögren's syndrome can be primary, or be produced accompanied by another disease (autoimmune diseases, tumors), then it is called secondary Sjögren's syndrome.

Active ingredients

-Essential fatty acids and fish extract: Protects by providing a uniform surface of the eye for the cornea. It hydrates and maintains optimum viscosity of tears. They stimulate the production of prostaglandins PG-3 and reduce eye damage and irritation. They maintain cell structure. They stimulate aqueous tear secretion.

-Collagen, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate: Moisturize to retain and absorb water molecules. It is important for the structural maintenance of the vitreous body.
